I know I abandoned it, and I was all but ready to give up on it myself, but I finally got myself to just write the last the damn bit, get it beta'd, and post it! :D

I'm getting back to all the things I've abandoned over the years, slowly, working my way backwards. For now it's Lineage, Euphoria, and my old Tarot Project! Later, I will also bring in my older fics, older fandoms, and my original fiction into my main focus as well.

1.) This story is still a post-S1 AU, but draws heavily on elements of S2 and S3 (basically all the events of those seasons, minus the evil!Morgana and Arthur/Gwen story archs, and compressed into one year)

2.) In light of Merlin's father's identity being revealed, the earlier chapters have been edited to fit that in.

Title: Second Star To The Right, Straight On 'Til Morning

Summary: Modern!AU. Having little time left to live once the cancer wins, and in too much pain to do so, Merlin decides to end his life to get away from the pain. Arthur holds him in his last moments of life.

Warnings: tear-jerker, euthanasia

Notes: Not much porn, but still from kinkme_merlin: Arthur/Merlin, Merlin has Cancer and only a small amount of time to live. In pain, he decides to end his life with an overdose of morphine. (You can get doctors to do thisin the UK, if the intention is to "free from pain" rather than "end life") With Arthur there the whole time, of course.

Also, a brief note on the terminology: euthanasia literally means ‘good death’, or the act of ending a life to end the pain.

Notes: On archery and its equipment: crossbows – which Arthur is seen using – were used by soldiers because they were easy to learn how to use and aim with, even though they couldn’t fire many arrows at once, and didn’t have much force behind them. Shortbows had more force behind them, and can fire more arrows in the same span of time in the hands of an expert. And longbows...well, didn’t really exist in Europe at the time, but as anachronistic as the show can be stretched…you couldn’t fire as many arrows so fast out of a longbow, but they had enough force to pierce armor. In other words, Arthur is apparently a terrible archer in canon. ^_^ Anyone else absolutely love that?
