I'm very much enjoying this story. There are several nicely done touches: Arthur needing to sleep with Merlin beside him offered a sense of vulnerability; Merlin making his way as an itinerant sorcerer is both amusing and a practical answer to the problem of his travels and supporting himself; Arthur's reaction to the shackled men, which surely would have been a relatively common sight in this time period, was affecting and again showed his vulnerabilities.
