Re: praise! ... and pedantry

Well, I know that the weird historical fabric of Merlin can't really be discounted. However, as much as it makes some of us more history-oriented fans flinch, one great thing about is that it gives us so much freakin' leeway to work with! Like, we can have all our characters wearing 15th century armor while speaking a 5th century language. I, personally, tend to use 9th century kingdoms as a reference whenever I think of "Albion's" geography, while I use historical references from as early as 3rd century, before bouncing back to magical and social traditions in the 12th century...and so on. I mean, I 'set' the story largely in the 5th century, yet fully intend to bring in the Kama Sutra in one of my fics without a hint of crack.

I'm just saying that this sort of stretch means that quibbling over dating of the show is pointless. Believe me, I've already tried.

However, the fun part is also seeing just how far we can push the limits of history without it becoming unbelievable (i.e. even though we use 15th century armor, if anyone brings in the Norman conquest during the canon timeline, we'd likely have some issues, there).

And, well, Merlin fandom seems to be full of college grads, namely English majors, including some with majors in Arthurian lit. I have fun and feel good about blending right in - mostly because I just started my junior year in high school, so...yeah. :D
