Yeah, I rather capitalize on the habits we see in the show, Merlin's slight conservatism and Arthur's carefree nature included. :) And I imagine that growing up with no magical influence would've left Merlin very hungry for any influence he could get. (Remember how fast he warmed up to Edwin?).
And if you ache for Merlin, then I've done my job. ;)
