You get all sorts of weird names all over the place. Nimueh is actually the lady of the lake (in some version, Merlin's apprentice of all things, though there are half a dozen other names, too). An assassin sorcerer once came to kill Arthur in the legend, which they used for Ewdin Myrddin in the show. Mordred, well, that's obvious, but the connection comes because in many versions of the legend, Mordred is Morgana's son. Geoffrey is for the Monmouth thing, ect. ect. ect.
And, I remember in a BBC interview, the show was described as Merlin going to his uncle, and Gaius getting a letter from his sister.
