Ode to Katie McGrath's Beauty (This is what happens in a Paperlegends Chat)

I was meant to write an ode/sonnet to Katie McGrath's boobs. This came out instead.

A woman, a lady, a goddess be
Skin glowing like the moon in bright of day
Her eyes, the color of the storming sea
That smile is a sin, leading me astray

And such is the flesh that she wears with pride
Beguiling me, temptation come alive
Within my heart does her allure reside
Where charms and seduction (my ruins) thrive

The darkened paths that she will lead me down
I follow happily, knowing my fate
In her gaze, in her bosom I will drown
Her supple curves and ripened chest await

My desecration, I will meet with joy
My lust and her carnality, our toy

A Smile or Three - TASM fic, D/s AU [On Tumblr]

I've been writing this fic for a while, but now I'm re-writing and re-posting it on Tumblr. I'll eventually clean it up on AO3, and for LJ, DW, and FFN. It can be tracked here:

A Smile or Three
Characters/Pairings: Peter Parker/Gwen Stacy/Flash Thompson
Rating: PG-13
Content/Warnings: D/s dynamics amongst teenagers, passing references to domestic violence
Summary: Spider-Man is a dom. Peter Parker is a sub. Against all odds, this actually works out quite well.
Total Word Count: 7700
Notes: Notes: Written for this spiderkink prompt, asking for sub!Peter in a D/s AU, and how that works with a (presumed) dom!Spider-Man. Though I will be honest, I'm mostly in it for the worldbuilding. :)

As of tomorrow, no more subject lines in comments on LJ

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] neotoma at As of tomorrow, no more subject lines in comments on LJ
Originally posted by [personal profile] moerlin at As of tomorrow, no more subject lines in comments on LJ
I was gonna update this with much happier stuff, but for the past week I've just been so enraged with LJ's asshattery that I've had it to here.

In case you didn't know, on 12/12 they first announced sneakily on the Russian journal of LJ's design guy that with new changes being implemented tomorrow, there will be no more subject lines in comments and that this change was "non-negotiable" (good round-up and translation here). I'm sure you all realize that this will basically make fandom and RP communities unusable. LJ's staff, however, doesn't give a shit. At least 18 pages of 100% negative feedback didn't sway them.

They've backpedaled some and will make keeping comment subject lines optional in some S2 styles, but the default (that 99% of communities are running right now) will decidedly be subject-less! Not to mention that their new and frankly, fucking ugly design will take forever to load and make the site a pain to use on mobile browsers.

And oh, it looks like they might be taking away the drop-down menu to select icons as well, so you'll have to load all your icons as pictures to select them. Lovely. (I will beta-test tonight to see if this is actually true.)

Really, I don't know why I'm surprised. LJ is always fucking with the parts of the site that actually work and breaking them, so this is just another instance of that. Because seriously, who are subject lines hurting by just being there? (And no, it can't be a matter of server strain, considering the new "graphic" interface will definitely be using up more resources - so much fun when there's DDoS attacks!)
As far as I know, they've never once listened to their customers, so those thousands of comments already posted probably won't do shit. I've left a message expressing my concerns about the new comment pages here anyway; so if you want to do that too, go for it! If anything, it helps with the rage. ;)

FYI: Dreamwidth is feeling Christmasy has reacted to LJ's bullshit and has open account creation (no invite codes needed) for the rest of the week. Might be a good idea to get your back-up or new home, whatever the case may be, up and running now.

To sum up, in my own ( [personal profile] neotoma) words: as of tomorrow, no more subject lines for comment in S1 styles at all, possibly some subject lines in S2 if you know to do it, and no more drop-down menu for icons.

SIGNAL BOOST: SAY YES TO GAY YA

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] darkspirited1 at SIGNAL BOOST: SAY YES TO GAY YA
This comes from an article by [livejournal.com profile] rachelmanija entitled, Say Yes to Gay YA.
(click the link for the full article)

Our novel Stranger has five viewpoint characters; one, Yuki Nakamura, is
gay and has a boyfriend. Yuki's romance, like the heterosexual ones in
the novel, involves nothing more explicit than kissing.

An agent from a major agency, one which represents a bestselling YA novel in the same genre as ours, called us.

The agent offered to sign us on the condition that we make the gay
character straight, or else remove his viewpoint and all references to
his sexual orientation.

This isn't about that specific agent; we'd gotten other rewrite requests before this one. Previous agents had also offered to take a second look if we did rewrites… including cutting the viewpoint of Yuki, the gay character.

It's time to stand up and demand change. Spread the word everywhere if you are just as angry and outraged by this.

Review of Merlin Ep. 408 Lamia

My thoughts Merlin Episode 408: Lamia, which I just watched (late, I know, that’s what happens when you have midterms on a Saturday).

On the plus side - knights, action, and whumped Merlin! ^_^ On the minus side - sexism and borderline misogyny! >.< )

Website Blocking

The government can order service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.

Risk of Jail for Ordinary Users

It becomes a felony with a potential 5 year sentence to stream a copyrighted work that would cost more than $2,500 to license, even if you are a totally noncommercial user, e.g. singing a pop song on Facebook.

Chaos for the Internet

Thousands of sites that are legal under the DMCA would face new legal threats. People trying to keep the internet more secure wouldn't be able to rely on the integrity of the DNS system.

“We support the bill’s stated goals — providing additional enforcement tools to combat foreign ‘rogue’ websites that are dedicated to copyright infringement or counterfeiting,” the Internet companies wrote in Tuesday’s letter. “Unfortunately, the bills as drafted would expose law-abiding U.S. Internet and technology companies to new uncertain liabilities, private rights of action and technology mandates that would require monitoring of websites.”  The chamber-led coalition in support of the bill includes Walmart, Eli Lilly & Co. and Netflix.

Google and other opponents of the legislation argue that restricting the Internet in the U.S. sets a bad international precedent and that the language defines infringing too broadly.

Building an (hopefully-to-be-published) Author Platform

I'm hoping to get myself published one day. In the mean time it seems prudent to try and build up a fanbase/authorbase/platform to improve my chances with literary agents and publishers.

My New Twitter
My New Blog

I do ask that any who go there from here on LJ or any other fandom place to not be too explicit if they tweet me something, as a lot of people I know from Real Life are going to end up there, too. Otherwise, just come on over (let me know who you are reon he) and add me!

All this to distract from the fact I've got a new novel idea and now may actually start over in NaNoWriMo.

Merlin Tarot Project, Finally Launching

I have (finally!) launched my Merlin Tarot Deck project, and I am hosting it on its own GoogleSites webpage, here:

Merlin Tarot Deck

What It Is: The Tarot is a journey, and one of the most famous journeys in Western mythology is that of Arthur and Merlin. This is simply my interpretation of their journey on their quest for a better Camelot, and ultimately the path they (may) take towards a brighter Albion.

All cards are depicted with manipulated graphics from the show, and each card comes accompanied with reflections on the card, both in general and in terms of why I chose its given image or scene for that card.

A snippet, from the Major Arcana page:

Some of the "characters", or cards, in the Major Arcana have roles that stand on their own, and some are more akin to relationships based on the person taking the journey. I spent a long time trying to decide on the Fool - possibly one of the most important cards, as they dictated the entire journey and the rest of the deck - before deciding between two characters for the Fool, Arthur and Merlin. My decision?

Both.

This Tarot deck is actually two decks - some cards have only one version, roles which stay the same regardless of whether Arthur or Merlin is the Fool, and some change, based on who it is.

An example is the next two cards after the Fool, 1 The Magician and 2 The High Priestess. The Magician is Merlin, regardless of whether Merlin or Arthur is the Fool. But then there are two High Priestess Cards - if Merlin is the Fool, then Nimueh is the High Priestess, but if Arthur is the fool, then Morgause is the High Priestess.

And some of the cards:

The Fool(s)

00 - The Fool (Arthur)00 - The Fool (Merlin)
(Arthur)
(Merlin)

The Magician

01 - The Magician
(Fool Neutral / Role-Centric)

And while I don't have the page for them yet, here are the cards for the High Priestesses:

02 - The High Priestess (Arthur: Morgause)02 - The High Priestess (Merlin: Nimueh)
(Arthur's High Priestess)
(Merlin's High Priestess)

Merlin, Season 4 (no particular spoilers, just general reaction)

I just watched Ep 403 and...

WHAT THE FUCK?

What the ever-loving fuck just happened?

Okay, this season, I was planning to just *NOT* do episode reviews, but after that whammy I don't think I can miss out. I'll post the reviews for eps 1, 2, and 3 soon enough.

In the mean time, a very general/non-spoilery Season 4 and Merlin Review:

I'm in the camp that says while Merlin has been going uphill in everything ranging from acting to filming to special effects since Season 1, in the writing department it's been nothing but downhill. Ever since the end of Season 3, they seemed to have been showing more awareness of their writing pitfalls, from shallow characterization to the way they write women, but the first three episodes are disappointing in that aspect. In light of these first few episodes and taking into account their stated expectations for Season 4, not only am I no longer hopeful, I seriously think these writers are biting off more than they can chew, and don't even realize they are choking as they are backing themselves into a corner.

I have been telling people that Merlin is an exercise in how a show can have shit writers and still be great if it's got everything else. It was only a joke until now.

I love the actors, the effects, everything else about the show - the actors' skills are absolutely superb in this episode. I only hope that in spite of the writing - which undertones from their pre-premier interviews suggest even they are unhappy with - they can keep this show afloat, them and the effects/production managers...because I don't see the writers being of any help any time soon.

Mississippi Personhood Amendment

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] gabrielleabelle at Mississippi Personhood Amendment
Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting very little no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

Writer's Block: Anti-bullying month

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] nano_muse at Writer's Block: Anti-bullying month
[Error: unknown template qotd]

The biggest bully in my life was probably me.

Considering I'm not even f-locking this I suppose this won't really be a secret anymore, but let me tell it to you anyway: I was a bully. And I was bullied. And I am still not sure which was worse. (Long memoir on bullying experiences is long.) )

Meta on bullying is not nearly as long but still rather long. Meta being that it is hard to get out of your head and realize just what is and is not bullying, just what is and is not crossing the line, and that as much as we despise bullying, the answer is not to despise the bullies. )

TL;DR

I was a bully, and I was bullied. I was the tough girl of the playground and of the block who managed to bully people without every laying a finger or a word on them. I was also shunned by my peers while barely clinging on to my friends, and eventually even assaulted for something that is such a small part of me and yet such a big part of what people see in me.

To this day, I struggle with trying not to bully others, trying not to be domineering. I try not to turn into a "bad boss", hurting and ignoring others to my ego-stroking benefit and at their expense.

There are a lot of types of bullies and a lot of reasons people bully, and there will be no one, easy solution to depend on to get rid of it, or even make a dent in it. But one type of bully I can say we can help is the ones who don't know that they are bullies.

And yes, they exist. They think their roughhousing is just playing, and don't realize that it's not playing when your friend/opponent is not nearly of your size or skill level. They think their back-and-forth insults are just joking around, without realizing that some of the people around them take these words to heart in a negative way. They believe what they are doing is truly okay, because they are seeing it on TV and in books and in video games that it's okay, and everyone expects someone else to do it so no one is just talking with them about it.

I can't speak for every bully or bullying victim, or even most, but I can speak for the ones who were like me in saying that we need to stop relying on bullshit campaigns and false platitudes, and that we need to start figuring out what bullying is and what it means for kids today, where they are getting the message from. The existing plans and campaigns against bullying are great, and they get a lot done, but they ultimately only reach out to a few kids because they only target a few specific types of bullies - they get a lot done but not enough, because we are placing too high and unrealistic expectations on them. We need to quit the futile efforts against stopping these ideas and instead equip kids with the ability to filter these ideas, learn what is and isn't okay, because if we don't, then no one else will - after all, no one else has so far.

No one did for me until it was too late.

What the hell did I just type 3300 words in an hour?! I spend 3 years ignoring that 'Writer's Block' widget on the LJ homepage and this is what gets me?!

Gay-Friendly Southwest's Homophobic Employee(s)

Originally posted by [livejournal.com profile] nano_muse at Gay-Friendly Southwest's Homophobic Employee(s)
I think this article explains it best:

Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey weren't expecting anything out of the ordinary when they boarded their Southwest Airlines flight last Monday. Camila kissed Leisha -- just a typical "I love you" peck like any couple might share.

Apparently, this was not okay with their flight attendant, who came over to explain that two women kissing was not acceptable, because Southwest is "a family-oriented airline."

Leisha and Camila were extremely upset. The flight attendant wouldn't back down. The conflict escalated. And Leisha and Camila were kicked off their flight.

Jeremy Sharp is a college student and a fan of Leisha's -- Leisha was one of the stars of the TV series "The L Word." Jeremy started a petition on Change.org demanding that Southwest apologize to Leisha and Camila. Please sign Jeremy's petition to Southwest today.

[...]

In multiple statements, Southwest has refused to accept responsibility for the actions of its employee, and has instead blamed Leisha and Camila for bringing this discrimination on themselves.

Southwest is normally a very gay-friendly airline - they are even the official airline for the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

At first I could understand the company's point of view, which is that they won't be responsible for the actions of one or a few employees - I am a Southwest regular, I have seen many other gay couples on these flights, and have never before seen this problem arise, so I can readily believe this is just the actions of one group of homophobic individuals. But now that they have tried to imply the couple brought discrimination on themselves, I hope for an apology for that statement, along with disciplinary action taken against those involved with kicking the couple off the flight for nothing more than a quick kiss.

Bookmarking - god I miss the good old days

Bookmarking is becoming such a nightmare, lately. :(

Just transferred from Delicious to Diigo. Two big downsides of Diigo: no tag bundles, and bookmarks are shown from oldest to newest, and there's no way to show it in reverse.

Tag bundles are easy to get around. Order of bookmarks, though...

Vote here to get Diigo's attention to create a function allowing us to switch the viewing order of our bookmarks.

Click that repost button if you are interested in being allowed to view bookmarks in newest-to-oldest order, in trying to improve Diigo to make up for Delicious, or hell just repost this if you are getting sick of the hassle bookmarking is becoming.

Post-Frenzy Alert

Okay, so, I've recently been realizing that a lot of my fics have large swaths of PG/untriggery material, then a few short scenes of something graphic that renders the entire fic unreadable for some. For a while I've been considering reposting some portions of some of my stories with the triggery sections either reduced or cut out altogether. Not all of them, just the ones where reducing or cutting the triggery bits wouldn't damage the story as a whole.

I've also been thinking about my multi-kink fics. They tend to be a wide variety of kinks, but just one or two mentioned in the warnings section and that only appear in one or two scenes can render the whole fic unreadable for some. I'm thinking of editing said stories so that at the beginning of each scene, in a tiny, unobtrusive font that you have to highlight to read, I list out the kinks/potential squicks/triggers so if anyone thinks there is something they will need to avoid in the fic, they can highlight it before hand, read the parts that are fine, and skip the ones that aren't.

What do you guys think about this plan? Good idea, butchering of fic, or just flat-out attention grabbing, or what?

Solidarity for Troy Davis

The state of Georgia shamefully executed Troy Davis on 21 September 2011, despite serious doubts about his guilt.

We are saddened and absolutely outraged by this appalling affront to justice.

At this time we would like to honour the life of Troy Davis and Officer Mark MacPhail.

Then we will redouble our commitment to the abolition of the death penalty, both in the USA and around the world.

In Troy's own words:

"The struggle for justice doesn't end with me. This struggle is for all the Troy Davises who came before me and all the ones who will come after me".

Amnesty International Petition

Quoted from [livejournal.com profile] kathkin:

Troy Davis, a US death row prisoner who Amnesty International has been campaigning on behalf of for a long time now, is due to be executed tommorrow at 7PM EDT. The article I linked to has a whole lot more information on the case, and there's a petition on the Amnesty USA site which only takes a couple of minutes to sign (seconds if you've used their system before). To quote the article:

This appalling decision renders meaningless the Board’s 2007 vow to not permit an execution unless there is “no doubt” about guilt. The Troy Davis case is riddled with doubt. Most of the witnesses who testified against him have recanted, while others have pointed to an alternate suspect as the real killer.

It's urgent, and it's not a completely lost cause yet - it's not uncommon for stays of execution to be granted hours or even minutes before sentence is carried out. I blogged about this case before here. So yeah. Please take a look?
