One thing does lurk in the background of all of this and that is the idea of The Once and Future King.
For now, I am assuming that Arthur will be able to wrestle Camelot back from Morgana and her supporters in 313. I suppose it is possible that it will be a cliff hanger episode and he does not do this until S4 but I am thinking that will not be the case. What may then play out in S4 is th newly born Round Table being fleshed out, Arthur the socially progressive prat, er Prince, at odds with his father who remains mired in tradition. I am wondering if the magic reveal may come in S4 because assuming there is a S5, the idea of the Once and Future King will have to be played out then. At some point, Arthur has to deal with the idea of Merlin being more then just his servant.
I mean, they can't wait until the end of S5 to have all things happen-the reveal, Arthur being crowned King, marrying Gwen and unifying the kingdom...doesn't that seem a tall order for the last few episodes of a season? I am thinking that perhaps S4, being a bit shorter will begin to set the stage for not just the Round Table but the coming end of Uther's reign. That may happen at the beginning of S5 at the latest...
And yes, to what you have said about Cenred, He is a very practical King under the leather and I think what he loves and respects the most is power-hence he adores the idea of Morgause and what she represents. He may even think he can control her. Needless to say, she will crap on him when she no longer needs him-so will he survive S4? I really hope so because The Once and Future King will need some supporters...
Traditionally, the Once and Future King unites Albion/England against an external force. As our Merlin universe seems to have no geographical reality, who would this external force be? Or will it be internal, one last final battle between the forces of magic and...whatever Arthur represents-the future.
I think that if they let Cenred continue, he would eventually end up respecting Arthur. After all, Arthur has kicked his ass twice-once on the battlefield and once on his home turf, so to speak. At some point, if Arthur has to make an impassioned speech to a bunch of old fart Kings who may not be eager to support him, Cenred, being closer to him in generation, would make a good ally.
To me, this boils down to more then just the battle for Camelot but also just who Arthur is really destined to be...
My two drachma on this wonderful topic! Thanks for some great thoughts on this!
